BRIEF + OVERVIEW
Neue Haus is a type design project focused on digitizing a previously undigitized found typeface. The project brief called for the faithful digitization of existing letterforms, using the original characters as a blueprint to construct a complete alphabet while referencing the anatomy and proportions of comparable typefaces for consistency and accuracy. The typeface was derived from letterforms found on a German Zassenhaus coffee grinder discovered in an antique store and was expanded beyond the original scope into a fully functioning variable typeface.

SOLUTION
The final system, designed as a variable font, includes three widths, seven weights, and additional inline and outline styles, demonstrating an exploration of both historical preservation and contemporary type technology. Neue Haus reflects an interest in extracting overlooked typographic artifacts and evolving them into flexible, modern systems suitable for a wide range of design applications. Born from the typographic markings of a Zassenhaus coffee grinder, Neue Haus reinterprets mid-century industrial lettering into a refined geometric sans-serif. Designed to embody the precision and practicality of its source, the typeface transforms an artifact of craftsmanship into a system of modern utility and balance. The original Zassenhaus lettering, with its clean mechanical geometry, served as a foundation for building a contemporary design language. Neue Haus preserves the spirit of that industrial clarity being rigid in structure yet softened through optical refinement. The result is a typeface that bridges the past and present, uniting the mechanical discipline of German engineering with a modernist typographic sensibility.
